Primary Storage devices V/s Secondary Storage devices

Introduction

Hello Friends, welcome to our page and on this page, you are going to read about the Types of Primary storage devices and the types of Secondary storage devices, their types, and some other details about them.

Types of Primary Storage devices V/s Types of Secondary storage devices is the full comparison article between two of them after this article you don’t have a need to see or observe the other article.

Firstly you should know about what is the storage devices. This is a type of Hardware device which is capable of Storing information.

There are two types of storage devices that are used in computers 1) Primary  2) secondary storage devices and in this article, we are going to talk about these two kinds of storage devices in detail.

For Example, RAM is considered as the main type of Primary Storage Devices  And Hard disk which is used in computers known as secondary devices. The amount of data stored in this are less and volatile in Nature.

Types Of Primary Storage Devices

RAM, Cache Memory, ROM, and Register memory are the four types of Primary storage devices that are used by computer devices.

RAM ( Random Access Memory)

RAM, or Random access memory, is the main types of primary storage devices, stores information that is being processed and offload at a very fast rate to the motherboard of the computer.

Then the information is used for GUI ( graphic user interface ), which allows the user to access the information with the mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc.

The RAM memory is categorized into three types which are given below –

  • DRAM ( Dynamic RAM ) – THis is the cheapest and most widely used type of memory. But a little bit slower than other memory.
  • SRAM ( Static RAM ) – Thi is a more expensive but faster memory Than DRAM.
  • MRAM ( Magnetic RAM ) – This is Better than both Other memory but it also the most expensive.

Cache Memory

The Cache memory is the second type of primary storage devices, The processor, also known as CPU (Central Processing Unit) processes information on your computer.

In order to do this, It needs somewhere to store the memory, which is in the case is the “cache memory” The cache memory transfers data at lightning Fast speed so it can be processed by the cores in the processor.

This memory holds less space than the RAM maximum of 12 MB.

ROM ( Read-only Memory )

This the third type of primary storage device, In this type of memory, the information is stored permanently, It is not lost after the system shuts down.

The advantage of this memory is that there are some complex functions like Translators that are used repeatedly.

These functions are permanently stored in the ROM and these instructions are hard-wired in ROM so the execution is very fast.

There are three types of ROM:

  • PROM ( Programmable Read-only Memory ) -Memory is programmable but only once The advantage of this memory is to store anything without any data loss.
  • EPROM ( Erasable Programmable Read-only memory ) – This type of memory can be erased and reprogrammed many times.
  • EEPROM ( Electrically Erasable Programmable read-only memory ) – They are very fast, but it can only be erased and rewritten several times. this is more expensive than Disk drives.

Register Memory

The Bits in the computer are known as register memory. The processor register is the smallest Types Of Primary Storage Devices.

Typically it holds around 32 to 64 Bits which is good enough for doing regular tasks on the computer. The processors are the Fastest primary storage device as well.

Introduction – Types of Secondary Storage Devices

Secondary storage devices also Non- volatile, long-term storage devices. You can lose your all data if secondary storage devices can’t exist.

This means from the moment you start typing a letter in Microsoft Word, and until you click on “save”, your all work is stored in RAM.

However, once you power off your machine or computer, that work is completely erased, but if you want to save the data you wrote you have to use secondary storage devices.

Types Of Secondary storage devices

There are different types of secondary storage devices are used-

  • Magnetic Storage device
  • Flash storage device
  • Optical storage devices

Magnetic Storage device

This is the first types of secondary storage devices, By his name, you can easily understand that this is a type of magnetic device who use magnetic methods to store data these are also called non- volatile storage devices, these storage devices are fit in budget but they are slow in nature in front of others.

Examples

  • Floppy disk – An FDD or Floppy disk drive is a computer disk drive that enables a user to save data to removable Disks, FDD was first made available in 1971. But today there is no use of FD drives because their storage capacity is very low and replaced by other CD-R or other disks or flash drives.
Types Of Primary Storage Devices
  • Hard disk drive HDD – HDD also is known as a hard disk drive, The hard drive is the computer’s main storage media devices that permanently store all data on the computer. The hard drive was first introduced in September 1956. the storage capacity of the hard drives is much higher than any other storage device.
Types Of Primary Storage Devices
  • Magnetic tape – It is a magnetically thin coated piece of plastic that is wrapped around wheels capable of storing data. The tape is much less expensive than other storage devices but not used now.

Flash storage device

This is the second type of secondary storage device, The Flash storage devices were invented or introduced by Dr. Fujio Masuoka. the advantage of these memories are, they are portable and easy to carry anywhere and they have a very large storage capacity.

Examples

  • USB Flash drive – This storage device is also portable and can be carried around on a key chain. this is a type of secondary storage device that has become popular due to a very small size and storage capacity.
Types Of Primary Storage Devices
  • Memory cards- SD or micro SD –  memory cards are also known as sd cards mostly used in smartphones and digital cameras for storing images and data. These are very small in size but their storage capacity is very high, their storage capacity is equal to a Hard disk.
Types Of Primary Storage Devices
  • Solid-state drive SSD –  SSD is the faster version of HDD used in computer their speed is very fast in front of HDD now if you need fast read and write speed you can use SSD in your system.

Optical storage devices

This is the third type of secondary storage devices,  An optical drive uses lasers to store and read data on CDs and DVDs. All-optical storage devices have their limited storage capacity they do not store data in TB and this the biggest problem of Optical storage devices.

Examples

  • CD-R – Alternatively referred to as CD-Wo(write-once) or WORM (write once read many) drives. CD-R is short for CD-Recordable and is a writable disc and drive that is capable of having information to the disc once and then having that disc read many times after that.
Types Of Primary Storage Devices
  • DVD – Alternatively referred to as a DVD writer, recordable DVD drives are disc drives capable of creating DVD discs. they are similar to the CD.
