Intelligence means that the network switch first inspects the incoming packet, determines its source and destination address, and then routes that packet to the right place accordingly.

Similarly, network switches significantly conserve bandwidth by forwarding packets to the correct destination.

If we talk now, now network switches are available in 10/100/1000 Mbit/s as well as 10/100 Gbit/s ports. They operate in layer 2 of the OSI Stack. It is also often understood as a multiport bridge.

Type of Switches

The switch is actually the connectivity point of the Ethernet network. It is a small device that receives data from multiple input ports and sends it to a special output port which brings the data to the correct destination on the network.

Managed Switch:-

This type of switch has a wide range of features such as protection, precise control, and complete network management. They are often used in organizations where very large networks are carried out and can be easily adjusted to improve the functionality of a network.

Although considered a costly option, their scalability makes them ideal for growing tissue. This is only achieved by regulating a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

There are also two types of managed switches:-

  • Smart Switches
  • Enterprise Managed Switches

Smart Switches:-

This basic management feature the switch only provides and has many capabilities to create multiple levels of protection, but if we compare it with other managed switches they have a simpler management interface.

Therefore, they are also often called partially managed switches. They are mostly used in fast and continuous LANs that support the transfer and allocation of gigabit data. They get a VLAN (Virtual LAN) configuration.

Enterprise Managed Switches:-

This switch has many features such as repair, copy, change, and display capabilities for different network configurations. This SNMP agent is with web interface and command-line interface.

They are also said to be fully managed switches and more expensive than other smart switches as they have more features that can be improved later if needed. It is used in organizations where a large number of ports, switches, and nodes are used.

LAN Switches:-

We can also call them to network Ethernet switches or data switches. Most of it is used to reduce congestion or bottleneck in the network, in which packets of data are distributed only to the intended recipients who need them. They are used to connect to the points in LAN (Local Area Network).

PoE Switches:-

The full form of this PoE switch is power over Ethernet. PoE switches are used in PoE technology. It is such a technology that integrates both data and power and in a single cable, it allows to give power to the device so that it receives data in parallel with the power.

Therefore, these switches provide better flexibility by simplifying the cabling process.

Advantages of Switches

Some advantages of network switch are given below:-

  • A network switch is Used to increase the available network bandwidth.
  • The usage of an individual host PC can be reduced workload by using it.
  • They help improve network performance.
  • Networks in which a very rare frame collision occurs. This is because the domain of switch collision is created on each connection.
  • They are smarter than the Hub.
  • These switches are connected to directly workstations.

Disadvantages of Switches

Some disadvantages of network switch are given below:-

  • It is exceptional (priced) compared to Network Bridge.
  • It is difficult to track network connectivity issues through network switches.
  • Broadcast traffic can be a more testable task.
  • If the switch is in Promise mode, they are more vulnerable to security attackers, for example by capturing IP addresses or spoofing Ethernet frames.
  • Correct design and configuration require a multicast package.
  • When it’s a diversion to limit broadcasts, they don’t work as well as routers.

Difference between Switches and HUB

Switches are used to network multiple computers simultaneously. A switch designed for the consumer market is often a small flat box with 4 to 8 Ethernet ports. This port can be easily connected to computers, cable or DSL modems, and other switches.

Upper-class switches have more than 50 ports and are installed more often. The switch is actually more advanced than the hub and also less capable than a router.

Unlike hubs, switches can easily limit the traffic from each port to receive each device connected with the switch. So you have a switch on the “smart hub”. Though one might think, that the switch doesn’t offer features like firewall and logging capabilities as shown by the router.

Well, while routers can be configured with the help of software (usually via a web interface), switches function the same way their hardware is designed.
